Museum of Transport & Technology
Victorian brass-helmeted firemen pedaling around on ancient bikes with hoses attached, bewhiskered gentlemen working at a forge, ladies in period costume doing pioneer things—these are all sights you might see at MOTAT, along with a plethora of planes, trains, automobiles, and an enormous old steam engine children can play on. MOTAT is the biggest museum of its type in the country, covering 16 hectares (40 acres) in beautiful Western Springs park, 5km (3 miles) from the city center. It has permanent exhibitions, such as NZ Wired in the Digital World, a display of technology from the abacus to the modern smartphone, as well as changing displays. A tram carries visitors to the Sir Keith Park Memorial Aviation display, located in a separate building, and to the zoo. Skip the overpriced cafe and have a picnic at Western Springs.
