Cuisine NZ gave The French Cafe its award for best restaurant in New Zealand in 2013 (the 2014 winners haven't been announced as we go to press) and many think that this sophisticated, formal, yet friendly place is the best restaurant in Auckland. You'll have to diner here to find out for yourself. Meals are by tasting menu only, and the fare does change seasonally but you might find yourself feasting on snapper ceviche with crab, apple jelly and creme fraiche; lamb with marinated figs and a parsnip cream; and seared langoustine with a beurre noisette. It’s in a scruffy part of town, but don’t let that fool you—this place is a class act.
