Philosophers' Rock
Glenna Goodacre's bronze sculpture of three of Austin's most recognized personalities from midcentury -- naturalist Roy Bedichek, raconteur J. Frank Dobie, and historian Walter Prescott Webb -- captures the essence of the three friends who used to chew the fat together at Barton Springs Pool. No heroic posing here: Two of the three are wearing bathing trunks, which reveal potbellies, wrinkles, and sagging muscles, and all three are sitting down in mid-discussion. The casual friendliness of the pose and the intelligence of the men's expressions have made this piece, installed in 1994, an Austin favorite.
