Everybody’s favorite weekend place, this park serves as Austin’s living room, swimming pool, outdoor theater, music arena—the Austin City Limits Festival is held here—and park. There’s always something fun happening here. Spread out over 347 green acres of rolling hills, Zilker Park is like a big friendly public playground with a wonderful swimming hole, the Barton Springs Pool. Families picnic, kids ride the Zilker Zephyr Miniature Train, and nature lovers rent canoes (p. ###) to take on Lady Bird Lake. Visitors also flock to the nearby Zilker Botanical Garden, Austin Nature & Science Center, and Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, a short bike ride from the main part of the park. In addition to athletic fields (nine for soccer, one for rugby, and two multi-use), the park has a 9-hole disk (Frisbee) golf course and a sand volleyball court. There are also greenbelt areas and trails that you can access from the park. The Zilker Hillside Theater’s summer musical productions are free, and during the winter holidays, Zilker’s historic Moonlight Tower becomes the town’s biggest holiday tree during the annual Trail of Lights (see Calendar of Events).
