This Austin institution (opened 1955) showcases rock, rockabilly, country, Latino, and new wave sounds. So many local acts have played here on their way to fame, and so many already famous acts will occasionally return, that it’s worth your while to check out this small, dark club on South Congress. With high stools and a pool table in the back room, it feels much more like a neighborhood bar than a major venue—that’s the lure of the place. (It’s got the best happy hour music in town.) Next door, the club operates a small upstairs gallery featuring lesser known acts, often with no cover.
