Abbaye St-Germain
This Benedictine abbey was founded in the 5th century by St-Germain, a former bishop of Auxerre, after whom it is named; he is buried here. Its school was once reputed throughout Christendom. The main reason to visit is to see the crypt murals depicting the stoning of St. Stephen, which date back to the 9th century and are the oldest in France. The lovely 17th-century cloister hosts art exhibitions and concerts in summer.
