Getting There

More than two dozen trains leave daily from Madrid for Ávila, about a 1 1/2- to 2-hour trip each way. Trains depart from Madrid’s Chamartín station. Tickets cost from about 9€ to 12€. The Ávila station is at Avenida José Antonio (tel. 90-232-03-20;, 1.6km (1 mile) east of the old city. You’ll find taxis lined up in front of Ávila’s railway station and at the more central Plaza Santa Teresa. For taxi information, call tel. 92-035-35-45.

Buses leave Madrid daily from Estación Sur de Autobuses at Calle Méndez Álvaro. In Ávila, the bus terminal (tel. 90-202-00-52; is at the corner of avenidas Madrid and Portugal, northeast of the center of town. A one-way ticket from Madrid costs 11€.

To drive here, exit Madrid at its northwest perimeter and head northwest on Highway N-VI (A-6) toward A Coruña, eventually forking southwest to Ávila. Driving time is around 1 1/4 hours.

The tourist information office, Av. Madrid 39 (tel. 92-022-59-69;, is open daily 9am to 2pm and 5 to 8pm. July to September it’s open Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, and Friday and Saturday 9am to 9pm.
