The best part of this venerable lodging is the terrific, if slightly expensive restaurant that occupies its central courtyard. The heavy wooden tables are set casually with paper covers for the midday meal, but the restaurant turns romantic at night when candles flicker on linen table settings on the patio surrounded by stone columns. Specialties of the house all issue from the wood-fired oven and include the crusty loaves of hearth breads as well as leg or shoulder of lamb, the inescapable roast suckling pig, or the classic veal chops of Avila (chuletón de Avila). It’s a popular spot with well-heeled locals, and you’ll find the wines of the nearby Castilian countryside to be very good.
