Posh places where one can sample Isan classics aren’t a new concept in Bangkok, but few are as pleasing Somtum Der. The first branch is in Sala Daeng but we prefer the laid-back vibe of the Thonglor outpost (it’s a nice casual spot in a fancy neighborhood). Kick off the meal with an order or two of fried chicken; it’s the house specialty. Nearly a dozen takes on som tum, the famous spicy papaya salad, are on offer as well, with including a delish freshwater crab version. Larb, a minced pork salad, is another top pick. The restaurant prides itself on using local recipes, which mean the spice levels are authentic, too, so order mai phet (“not spicy”) if a milder taste is preferred.
