La Rochelle Mansion and Museum
The Bar Harbor Historical Society moved in 2020 into this grand “summer cottage,” once occupied by Gilded Age “rusticators” who summered on MDI. The two-floor museum inside showcases artifacts of life from that era—dishware and photos from the grand old hotels that once dotted the town, exhibits on the noted landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, period furniture and artifacts from the buildings former occupants, and so forth. Just as interesting are scrapbooks document the island’s devastating 1947 fire, a collection of old trail maps, and more.
