Bar Electricitat
The lunchtime atmosphere matches the name at this Barceloneta favorite (although the name actually refers to the fact that the building once housed the generator that powered the fishermen’s quarter). Founded in 1908, the no-frills bodega has made few concessions to progress since the advent of the light bulb. Good but inexpensive wines still flow from barrels mounted on the wall, and the fridge is made of wood. Besides tasty fried fish, classics include Russian salad (ensaladilla rusa) made with crabmeat, and pulpo a feira—Galician style octopus. It’s also a great place to sample Barceloneta’s famous bomba, a deep-fried ball of meat and mashed potato, with a glass of house vermouth. Note the original Modernista wrought iron door.
