Casa Alfonso

Hams hang from the ceiling as you enter this delightfully traditional deli-cum-taberna in Dreta de Eixample. You could order one of their famous flauta sandwiches, with a dizzying selection of fillings, from the counter to take away but why not linger for an aperitif and watch the action at the bar? The classics of Catalan and Spanish bar food are here, with an emphasis on croquettes and tortilla (potato omelet), and you can’t go wrong with charcuterie and cheese boards from the deli. The walls are decorated with scenes of Barcelona, old sherry advertisements, and photographs of earlier generations of the García family who still run the place. As the evening wears on, smartly dressed couples will slip past you towards the intimate dining room at the back, greeted like old friends by the waitstaff.
