El Xampanyet

Before the champagne makers of France forced a name change in 1970, Catalan’s sparking cava was known as xampany. Founded in 1929, El Xampanyet, just around the corner from the Museu Picasso, is one of the city’s best-loved cava bars. From the moment its shutters roll up it is crammed with locals and visitors jostling aimiably among the marble-topped tables and a bar laden with salty, thirst inducing, snacks. Favorites include butifarra sausage, fried padrón peppers, and tortilla de patatas (potato omelet). A glass of the house cava, served in old style coupes, costs just 2.50€. Be prepared to wait in line to get in.
