Beyeler Foundation
A giant among modern and contemporary art museums, the Beyeler Foundation was created by Hildy and Ernest Bayeler, the two visionary art dealers who created the Art Basel fair. Their superb collection is housed in a light-filled structure, created by "starchitect" Renzo Piano on the outskirts of the city. Seminal works by Monet (his water lilies), Picasso, Klee, Calder, Rothko, Liechtenstein, Max Ernst, Joan Miro, and others are exhibited alongside angular tribal sculptures from New Guinea, Nigeria and other regions of Oceania. The museum has become famous for its curated special exhibits, many of which tour the world after debuting here. In 2018, their blockbuster shows included one on Balthus, and another on the "parallel careers" of Francis Bacon and Alberto Giacometti.
