Planning a trip to Beaufort, SC

Getting There

If you’re traveling from the north, take I-95 to exit 33; then follow the signs to the center of Beaufort. If you’re leaving from Charleston, take U.S. 17 S.; then head left on U.S. 21, and follow signs to Beaufort. From Hilton Head, go on U.S. 278 W.; after it turns into 278 Alt, exit onto S.C. 170. Follow S.C. 170 into Beaufort.

Greyhound (www.greyhound.com) runs buses twice daily between Beaufort and Savannah (55 min.); for Charleston you have to take a bus to Orangeburg and change there. The bus stop is at Coastal Travel (tel. 843/524-4646), 3659 Trask Pkwy, on the outskirts of town.

Palmetto Breeze (tel. 843/757-5782; www.palmettobreezetransit.com) runs local buses between central Beaufort, Hilton Head Island, and Bluffton, with fares just $2.

VISITOR INFORMATION

Beaufort Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, 713 Craven St. (tel. 800/638-3525 or 843/525-8500; www.beaufortsc.org), has information and self-guided tours of this historic town. It’s open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, and Sunday noon to 5pm.
