Built on a hill at the heart of a hilly green valley, Benevento is a very pleasant town. Only fragments of the defensive walls that once completely enclosed the town are still visible today, together with the fortress -- Rocca dei Rettori, at Piazza IV Novembre -- in the highest part of town. Built by the pope in 1321 over the preexisting Longobard and ancient Roman defensive structures, the fortress was recently restored and houses the provincial government; parts of it can be visited when special exhibits are hosted by ARCOS (the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sannio). The Villa Comunale is a delightful public garden, designed in the late 19th century and graced by elegant Liberty-style fixtures such as lamps and benches.
