Benevento may be small, but dining is taken seriously at the many restaurants in town. Locals also are fond of dining excursions to the nearby villages.

Strega -- the Brew of Benevento

Appropriately named "witch," this local liqueur might well enchant you with its unique bittersweet taste. Concocted in the 17th century from a secret mixture of 17 herbs and spices, it is served as a digestive or to "correct" your espresso (adding a bit of alcohol to it); it is a good complement to fruit salads and ice cream, too. The liqueur also comes in a cream variety (similar to Baileys). It is also used for a proprietary candy -- caramella Strega -- an individually wrapped hard candy with a soft, creamy Strega-flavored center. All those goodies make excellent souvenirs and are for sale at local shops.
