Stocking Up on Souvenirs

Among the local specialties we absolutely love is torrone. Made in both hard and softer, chewy versions, this wonderful delicacy is a crumbly nougat made of egg whites, honey, and nuts -- usually hazelnuts and almonds. A favorite in Roman times -- historian Tito Livio mentions it in his writings -- it only became popular in Europe in the 17th century, when the Beneventan candy makers created today's traditional varieties, which are covered with dark chocolate or with a special icing flavored with lemon, orange, or coffee. Among the best confectioners in town are Alberico Ambrosino, Corso Garibaldi 111; tel. 0824-28546); Umberto Russo, Via Gaetano Rumno 17 (tel. 0824-24472); and the Fabbriche Riunite Torrone di Benevento, Viale Principe di Napoli 113 (tel. 0824-21624), a consortium of local torrone producers. You will also find torrone Strega, and delicious caramelle -- small hard candies with a soft center of "cream of Strega" (the Strega version of Baileys liqueur).
