Church of the Annunciation
Built in the early 16th century, the church is a unique specimen of a fortified temple that merges Byzantine and Gothic architectural styles. The main cornice is lined with orifices that were used as rifle ranges, while the prayer chamber was richly decorated with icons and frescoes. In 1944, retreating Nazis demolished the church. What you see now was rebuilt in 1984, but the interior walls are still plaster-bare. You can see the 16th-century post-Byzantine frescos, salvaged from two pillars in the rubble, and a model of the original interior in the Museum of Icons.
