Frommer's Staff

On the way to the centerpiece Iron Age Village, you'll pass the museum, which has a small but well-designed exhibition of artifacts and models depicting life in the area some 2,700 years ago. Press on to the village at the northern edge of the park by the lake, and follow the "tour direction" (Kierunek Zwiedzania) boards to see the palisades and rampart fortifications, thatched roofs, wood-beam floors, and wicket doors of the settlement. In this compound, you'll find demos of pottery and other aspects of Iron Age life, all enacted by enthusiastic and educated staff sporting coarse robes. If you haven't made reservations for the demos, keep an eye out for school groups and just piggyback on their demo sessions (they will be in Polish, but you don't need to understand the talk to appreciate the crafts). It takes no more than an hour to cover the grounds. The kids might want to have a go at the pony rides or a trip on the leisure boat to nowhere. Although it opens at 8am, the settlement is in full swing only at about 10am. It's an outdoor museum, so April through September is the best time to visit.
