Guides and demonstrations of pottery-making and flint-stone fire-working have to be booked in advance by calling tel. 52/302-50-55. English-speaking guides cost 100 z for 1 1/2 hours. The ticket office sells a good map of the Piast Route by Bik (7 z).

At the reserve's parking lot, several outdoor stalls serve snacks and meals. Across the road, Karczma Biskupinska (Biskupin 6; tel. 52/302-50-14; www.karczma-biskupinska.pl) offers a similar spread but with indoor seating. They also have basic accommodations, priced at 100 z for a double.

Getting There

By Bus -- From Gniezno, regular buses run to Znin (10km/6 1/4 miles to the north of Biskupin) and Gasawa (2km/1 1/4 miles to the south of Biskupin). The journey is about an hour. From either Znin or Gasawa, you catch a bus or the train to Biskupin. The bus service runs regularly on weekdays. Should you miss your bus at Gasawa, the 2km (1 1/4 miles) to Biskupin is manageable on foot.

By Train -- The narrow-gauge railway (tel. 52/302-04-92) runs from Znin to Gasawa and stops right in front of the reserve. From mid-April to August, the trains run from 9am to 3pm every 1 1/2 hours. There is an additional run at 4pm during the archaeological festival in September. The journey takes 40 minutes from Znin and 25 minutes from Gasawa. Tickets, bought from the train driver, are 10 z one-way and 18 z round-trip.

By Car -- From Poznan, it takes 1 1/2 hours. Leave the city on Road 5, turning north at Gniezno. As you approach Gasawa, you will see signs for the reserve.
