If you arrive on Block Island without reservations, here's one approach to getting an inexpensive bed for the night: show up at an inn an hour or so after the last ferry has departed. Management will often lower quoted rates if rooms are still available.
Most inns are in buildings over 100 years old, so expect wavy floors, narrow hallways, steep staircases, and rooms of odd configuration. Air-conditioning is rare on the island, and such amenities as TV and Wi-Fi cannot be assumed. With what amounts to a 4-month year for businesses serving tourists, the differences in cost between moderate and very expensive room rates are narrow. Two- or 3-night minimum stays are routinely required.
