Cambridge’s Central Square neighborhood is the artistic center of the city, with music clubs, a dance complex, yoga studios, and tons of cafes and restaurants from around the world. The fast-casual Life Alive is a good complement to the spectacle, with organic bowls of food and a large selection of fresh juices and smoothies. The Emperor grain bowl is emblematic: tofu, brown rice, corn, shredded carrots, sundried tomatoes, kale, cheddar cheese, sun sprouts, and miso sauce. Portions are generous—you won’t leave hungry. Guests order at the counter (at lunch time the line is often to the door) and get food either to go or delivered to a table—there are about a dozen at street level, and about twice as many one floor down, in a cozy, cave-like space.
