Originally an excellent bakery, the Buttery became a cafe and eventually a restaurant. South Enders eat here all day, starting with luscious baked goods for breakfast on the go. The ovens crank out terrific bread for sandwiches at lunch, which also features salads and hearty soups made in-house. Consider a midafternoon cupcake, but don’t spoil your dinner. The back and downstairs dining rooms turn into a sit-down comfort-food restaurant (meatloaf, roasted salmon, chicken pot pie) in the evening, and for weekend brunch. At all three meals, takeout is a popular option.
