The Friendly Toast serves upscale diner food in a kitsch-encrusted space plopped incongruously in the midst of Kendall Square’s tech paradise. Surrounded by vintage ads and memorabilia, you can dig into large portions of breakfast food (served all day) and comfort food like mac and cheese, burgers, and overstuffed burritos. The crazy lines for weekend brunch make sense after you’ve seen the menu, which is clearly the work of someone with experience battling hangovers. Among the omelets and pancakes, you’ll find dishes like spicy mashed potatoes with chorizo, fried eggs, and chipotle sauce, and “drunkard’s French toast,” with Grand Marnier–raspberry sauce.
