Bradford is called "the curry capital of the U.K.," boasting a vast array of Asian restaurants featuring dishes from Kashmir, Gujarat, the Punjab, and beyond. Many of the best of these curry houses are found along Morley Street near the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television. Our favorite along this street is Kashmir, 27 Morley St. (tel. 01274/726513), which, although a very simple place, serves authentic and excellently prepared Indian food.

An even better choice is Mumtaz, Great Horton Road (tel. 01274/571861), Bradford's leading Kashmiri curry house, drawing large crowds of hungry diners. Meat, fish, and vegetable curries are prepared with great skill and flavor. Expat Indians prefer to accompany their meal with masala lassi, a yogurt drink, or perhaps sweet mango juice, as liquor isn't served.

Bradford is not a great restaurant town except for its curry houses, and some travelers prefer to dine at their hotel restaurants.
