Hitting the Slopes

Bressanone's major playground is Monte Plose, and the gateway to ski slopes and hiking trails alike is the outlying village of Sant'Andrea. Skiing here is not as glamorous as it is in better-known resorts like Cortina, but it is excellent and much less expensive. A ski pass is 30€ to 40€ a day and can be purchased at one of the outlets near the Sant'Andrea funicular (tel. 0472-200-433), which costs 10€ round-trip for adults and 8€ for children ages 8 to 14. The funicular runs from July through September weekdays 9am to noon and 1 to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 6pm; and December through May daily 9am to 4:30pm. (Winter schedules vary considerably with snow conditions; a summer ascent will take you to a network of Alpine trails near the stop at Valcroce.) The tourist board in Brixen provides maps and information on skiing, mountain refuges, and other details you need to know to enjoy this mountain wilderness.
