Auberge de Jeunesse Jacques Brel
The friendly, rather ramshackle hostel has the reputation of being the best one in Brussels. It’s near Botanique, but even better it's on a small road leading up to the delightful place des Barricades. Because the hostel is inside an old house, rooms are of odd shapes and sizes. It's not that large: the total bed capacity is 170, spread over 40 rooms, which hold from two to eight beds and are sold either on a bed basis, or as entire rooms. The décor is basic; you're here for the value and the company of like-minded travelers, most of them young. The bar, open from 7pm to 1am, gets packed at busy times. Dishes like pastas are on offer at around 7 to 8 euros, and there's also a daily special. The very good breakfast is organic where possible. Meeting rooms equipped with projectors and sound systems ensure a steady supply of groups; computers and free Wi-Fi are on the main level, and you can use the Laundromat for €5. There's also a paved courtyard garden that's perfect for sunny evenings.
