Country Inns

New Hope and its New Jersey neighbor across the Delaware River, Lambertville, have well-deserved reputations for their country inns and restaurants. Many frown on children and most require 2-day stays on weekends, though it's worth checking for last-minute openings. The listings here only scratch the surface: Romantic choices include the cozy Inn at Phillips Mill, 2590 River Rd., New Hope (tel. 215/862-2984; www.theinnatphillipsmill.com), and Upper Black Eddy's gorgeously appointed 1836 Bridgeton House on the Delaware, 1525 River Rd. (tel. 888/892-2007; www.bridgetonhouse.com), where most rooms feature a private riverfront balcony or patio.

Luxurious, bucolic inns include Barley Sheaf Farm Estate & Spa, 5281 Old York Rd., Holicong (tel. 215/794-5104; www.barleysheaf.com), with lavishly appointed suites in a vintage manor house and stone bank barn, and tranquil mansion rooms and very posh carriage house cottages at the Woolverton Inn, 6 Woolverton Rd., Stockton, NJ (tel. 609/397-0802; www.woolvertoninn.com), complete with Frette linens and pet sheep. Located less than a mile from downtown Doylestown, Highland Farm Bed & Breakfast Inn, 70 East Rd. (tel. 215/345-6767; www.highlandfarmbb.com), the lovingly restored home of Oscar Hammerstein, could put a song in your heart. Each room is tastefully decorated to reflect a different Rogers and Hammerstein musical, and guests are invited to play the Pranberry grand piano in the Sound of Music Room, where wine and cheese are served in the evening. Amenities include a swimming pool and tennis court, and children are welcome.

For convenient, in-town digs with premium style, there's the handsomely restored 1812 Lambertville House, 32 Bridge St. (tel. 609/397-0200; www.lambertvillehouse.com). In New Hope, Porches on the Towpath, 20 Fisher's Alley (tel. 215/862-3277; www.porchesnewhope.com), originally an 1830s granary, provides 10 rooms with charming, peaceful seclusion right in the heart of town.
