Bali throws up places which perfectly define that tropical island moment. If you're looking for a quintessential Robinson Crusoe–like idyll, head to Semara Luxury Villa Resort, perched on Uluwatu's cliff tops, and take the resort inclinator 500 ft. down to a private white sand cove with shimmering emerald water. There you'll find desert-island chic at Finn's Beach Club, a castaway-style thatched-roof-and-bamboo beach bar/restaurant. As a private resort beach club, day visitors must purchase a Full Beach Pass, which reimburses you with just about half of the price back in food and beverage credit from the all-day menu, plus the use of watersports equipment—kayaks, stand-up paddles, and snorkel gear—and one of 50-plus sunbeds. (It's a bit of a trek down here to Bali's southernmost coastline, so make a blissful day of it.) There's rustic beach shack charm, yes, but the well-stocked, stone-clad bar supplies Champagne on ice, sophisticated cocktails, and flavorsome global dishes from a casual dining menu. Naturally, there's an emphasis on freshly caught local seafood—like the mouthwatering chargrilled mahimahi fillet—but salads (including Greek and Thai), pastas, sirloin sandwiches, and gourmet pizzas hot from the stone oven are all good. This is an excellent family-friendly venue: children under twelve are free, there's a kids' menu, and little ones can snorkel in shallow reefs, play on grass verges, and explore rock pools at low tide. Reserve one of two tree-top bales, on stilts clinging to the rocks, for private massages and dining. Daily bonfires on the beach at sunset and lazy weekend afternoons with live DJs complete the idyllic set-up.
