Buyeo isn't known for any specific dishes, but there are some solid places here that serve good traditional Korean food. The most popular place in town is the Gudulae Dolssambap, 96-3 Gua-li, Buyeo-eup, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do (tel. 041/836-9259 or 041/835-0463). The place offers a delicious dolssambap (stone pot rice served with lettuce and other leaves for wrapping), and it comes with a generous number of banchan and suyuk (cold, sliced pork), which makes the price higher. They give you a raw egg for you to pop into your rice so that it can cook in the hot stone pot and the rice gets nice and crispy on the bottom. The dolssam jeongshik (traditional rice meal) is still a bargain at W10,000. Unfortunately, the sign is only in Korean, so look for an orange sign with black lettering outlined thinly in white.

If you want a maeuntahng (spicy seafood hot pot), the best place in the area is Baengmagang Shikdang (tel. 041/835-2752), which is right across from the Baekjaedaegyo (bridge). They also have a pretty tasty grilled eel, fresh from the river (hence the name of the restaurant). Most dishes fall in the W10,000 to W20,000 range.

If you just want a good Korean spread, go to the Gaeseong Shikdang (tel. 041/834-3999), where the resident halmuhni (grandma) has been making han jeongshik (traditional Korean meals) for over 45 years (although the sign says 40). The country-style han jeongshik will set you back only W8,000, but you can splurge and get one of the beef or pork dishes for W20,000 to W25,000. This unassuming restaurant is located on the main drag if you're going toward Guncheong, across the street from Jeongnimsa.
