Situated in the foothills of the Andes in Alto Cachapoal, Altaïr is a joint venture between Viña San Pedro and France's Chateau Dassault, launched in 2001 to craft a uniquely Chilean grand cru. The winery itself is understated yet majestic, made of natural stone culled from the surrounding area, and their "quincho" (pavilion) and tasting room boast a 360-degree view of the patchwork valley below and the hills. This is without a doubt the Cachapoal Valley's finest winery, and both their Altaïr and Sidera cabernet blends are elegant yet powerful. All Altaïr wines have been rated over 90 points by Wine Advocate. There is a range of inspired tour programs, including horseback riding through the foothills ($45/£30 per person). A basic tour and tasting costs $22 (£15) per person.
