Teatro Romano

Built in the first century b.c., this crumbling theater was one of the largest in the Roman empire, capable of holding 10,000 spectators. It was discovered by chance in 1980 when a warehouse on the site burned down, which explains the cramped setting among much later buildings, making further excavation tricky. The visitor center has been cleverly designed to showcase the archaeological site and a free exhibition gives clear explanations of the city’s Roman history in Spanish and English. Known as Gades to the Romans, Cádiz became a valued port and naval base. So much so that Julius Caesar granted its inhabitants citizenship of Rome in 49 b.c.
