A government-run parador has held down this beautiful spot between Parque Génoves and Playa La Caleta since the system launched in the 1920s. This latest incarnation, which opened in September 2012, is the third try, and it is the charm. Every room has a terrace overlooking the ocean as well as one or two big beds looking out at the sea through a glass wall, a great writing desk behind the headboards of those beds, and wall-to-wall marble bathrooms. The accompanying spa runs the gamut of beauty and wellness treatments for both men and women, and features a series of splendid rooftop pools, again overlooking the ocean. Staying here is a little like booking a room suspended between sea and sky. La Caleta beach is steps away, while the cathedral is about a 15-minute brisk walk through the city.
