A small but mighty faction of contemporary-arts advocates here have been lobbying for years for funding to build a large-scale contemporary art gallery along the lines of the Vancouver Art Gallery or Toronto's Art Gallery of Ontario, but thus far have had no success. With Edmonton's stunning new Art Gallery of Alberta, the fight has gotten even tougher for them to see their dreams become a reality. But, knowing Calgary's limitless ambitions, they will. And in the meantime, there's the very good Art Gallery of Calgary on downtown's Stephen Avenue Mall, a mostly pedestrian stretch in the heart of the city's financial district. Housed in an historic building, the gallery's constantly changing program features prominent contemporary artists from all over the city and around the world in virtually every discipline -- you will see well-curated photography (both documentary and conceptual), painting, and avant-garde sculpture, all with a smart, contemporary edge. It also offers a cafe (tel. 403/410-9358) with a lovely sidewalk patio.
