The kind of neighborhood bar where everybody knows your name (provided you're  a regular), the Black Ram was started because owner Adam Whiteman claims he lost track of the amount of money he was spending funding his friends' drinking habits at his own home. So he moved his own furniture into the public arena, started charging, and the rest is history. The bar counter is small and brimming over, but atmosphere easily spills out onto the sidewalk. Drinkers can try craft beers or glasses of local wine. By day, when the bar is known as The Power and the Glory, the atmosphere is a fraction less overwhelming (by night the space is heaving with Tamboerskloof's garrulous hipsters). It's a lovely place to sit and people-watch, snacking on baked treats (just order from the counter) and imbibing excellent coffee, roasted in Cape Town by Deluxe Coffeeworks.
