The Fugard
Occupying the historic Sacks Futeran building in the former neighborhood of District Six, entrance to this beautiful, privately owned theater is via the façade of a restored Gothic-style church hall. Named for a living icon of South African theater (Tony Award-winning playwright Athol Fugard), in a few short years The Fugard has become synonymous with excellent productions of local plays. It remains afloat thanks to the phenomenal success of perennial crowd-pleasers, none less buzzy than a recent production of "The Rocky Horror Show," which extended its initial run to six months and promptly rescheduled a follow-up season. The main theatre has 335 seats and there's an additional space that puts more focus on smaller dramas and experimental productions.
