Carcassonne has two distinct shopping areas. In the modern lower city, boutiques can be found along rue de Verdun as well in other streets such as rue Albert Tomey and rue de la Liberté. The main market is in place Carnot on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. In the walled medieval city, the streets are chock-full of tiny stores and boutiques; most sell gift items such as antiques and local arts and crafts.
In the Cité, a great store is Comptoir des Vins et Terroirs, 4 rue du Comte Roger (tel. 04-68-26-44-76), where you'll find a wide selection of regional wines. Some antiques stores to visit are Faye Henriette, 4 place du Château (tel. 04-68-47-09-45), for furniture; and Antiquités Safi, 26 rue Trivalle (tel. 04-68-25-60-51), for paintings and art objects. (There is another branch in the lower town at 54 rue Verdun.)
