La Mulata is the Afro-Caribbean mermaid whose portrait presides over this hipster haven in the old town. The fun, low-key space is also decorated with colorful murals, painted fish, and other works of art as well as found objects such as green beer bottles repurposed as lighting fixtures. The food is similarly artful, with coconut rice arriving in a little pyramid and a cylinder of chopped avocado and tomatoes gracing most plates. Those sides accompany soulful Caribbean dishes including sautéed fish, garlic shrimp, grilled lobster, and other treats from the sea. All meals start with a delicate fish soup (included in the price) that's so fresh it's not uncommon to get a little fish scale in your teeth. Drinks are fruity and potent, and the service is just as sweet.
