Planning a trip to Caserta
Visitor Information
The tourist information office for the province, ETP, Palazzo Reale, 81100 Caserta (tel. 0823-550011; fax 0823-326300), maintains an information booth at Corso Trieste 9, at the corner with Piazza Dante and Via Douhet (tel. 0823-321137; www.eptcaserta.it). It's open Monday to Saturday 9am to 7pm.
You'll find a pharmacy, Corso Trieste 47 (tel. 0823-326147), not far from the entrance to the Reggia. The ospedale civile (hospital; tel. 0823-231111) is nearby, at Via Tescione Gennaro 1; dial tel. 118 or 0823-321000 for an ambulance. You can call the police at tel. 113 or 112, and the fire department at tel. 115. The post office is on Via del Redentore 27, off Via Giuseppe Mazzini, and is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 2pm.
Special Events
Between the last Monday of August and September 15, Casertavecchia hosts a well-established music and art festival, Settembre al Borgo (www.casertamusica.com), and the borgo comes alive with concerts, theater, and dance.
Getting Around
Public transportation connects all the major sights. You can use the bus to reach Casertavecchia: Bus no. 110 leaves from Piazza Garibaldi in front of Caserta train station, across from the palace. Taxis wait at the stand on Piazza Garibaldi across from the train station (tel. 0823-322400).
Getting There
Caserta is easily reached by train from Naples. Trains leave Napoli Stazione Centrale every 10 to 20 minutes for the 30-minute trip to Caserta. Contact Trenitalia (tel. 892021 in Italy; www.trenitalia.it) for fares and information. Trains arrive at Caserta's railway station in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, only a few steps from the Reggia, on the other side of Piazza Carlo III. Caserta is also served by Metro Campania Nord-Est (tel. 800-053939 toll-free in Italy; www.metrocampanianordest.it) from Naples.
By car, from either Rome or Naples, take autostrada A1 to the exit marked CASERTA NORD, and follow the signs for CASERTA CENTRO. Coming into town, you will see signs for SAN LEUCIO, CASERTA VECCHIA, and REGGIA. The Reggia (Royal Palace) is in the center of town; from the Royal Palace head northeast and follow the signs reading CASERTAVECCHIA; the medieval town is about 10km (6 miles) up the hill. Head northwest from Piazza Vanvitelli, following the signs for SAN LEUCIO to reach the Belvedere.
