Getting There

The bus is a good option, with SITA (tel. 089-405145; www.sitabus.it) offering service from Naples and Sorrento, and Curreri Viaggi (tel. 081-8015420; www.curreriviaggi.it) offering regular departures from Naples's Capodichino Airport as well as from Rome (respectively for 10€ and 16€). A faster option is the train. The Circumvesuviana (tel. 800-053939; www.vesuviana.it) railroad from Naples and nearby towns offers frequent service and makes four stops in town; the ride takes 45 minutes from Naples and costs 2.40€. You can also use the FS national rail service (tel. 892021 in Italy; www.trenitalia.it); trains arrive at Castellammare FS station on Piazza Giacomo Matteotti.

From Naples or another seaside location, ferries provide the most scenic method of travel to Castellammare: Metro del Mare (tel. 199-600700; www.metrodelmare.net runs from Pozzuoli, Naples, and Sorrento (service is suspended in winter). In 2011, the service was reduced to a minimum and only ran during July and August, but we were told that a fuller schedule should be resumed by 2012. Other companies offering seasonal service are Alilauro (tel. 081-4972222; www.alilauro.it), LMP (tel. 081-7041911; www.consorziolmp.it), and NLG (tel. 081-5520763; www.navlib.it). By car, take autostrada A3 to the exit for CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA; once on SS 145, follow the CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA signs directly into town.

Buses and trains are the best way to get around the area; in town, there are local buses, but taxis are more convenient. As elsewhere in Italy, drivers wait at taxi stands, at Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Unità d'Italia.
