Papuk is the largest mountain in Slavonia. It and the land surrounding it were proclaimed protected areas in 1999. Papuk is geologically and ecologically diverse, and some of its rock formations are estimated to be 350 million years old. Besides of its geological significance, Papuk is home to cultural artifacts from the Iron Age and the remains of seven castles from the Middle Ages. It is also a recreational area frequented by hikers, skiers, and those who want to soak in Papuk's thermal pools and Orahovacko Lake.
