The Dunhill Hotel

A sepia-toned beaut, this is the oldest hotel in Charlotte, having opened just two months after the stock market crash of 1929. Thankfully, somehow it survived. At ten stories, it once towered over the city, but today it's hemmed in by soaring glass and steel on all sides. That old-fashioned charm is The Dunhill's strong point, and the owners have managed to retain atmosphere without making things feel creaky. Rooms are studies in how to do brown artfully, from the handsome wallpaper to the heavy wood furnishings (many of which look like fine antiques—especially the four poster beds that grace some rooms). Bathrooms are gleaming white marble and tile. In a building this old, there's no on-site gym, but guests get a free pass to the nearby YMCA, where there's a pool, extensive equipment, and even free fitness classes. A shuttle will whisk you there (if its raining; if not, the walk is quick) or anywhere else within a 2-mile radius. The restaurant, Asbury’s, is terrific, and on weekends, in keeping with the ambiance of the Dunhill, a talented pianist tinkles the ivories in the lobby. A very special place.
