Rooster's

Almost all the seating in the dining room of Rooster’s consists of enveloping, massive brown leather booths. That tells you something about the aesthetic. It's casual, yes, but it's also pampering, and each party gets its own island of privacy. The food will make you feel coddled, too: meats that are smoked in-house, locally sourced (and wonderfully fresh) vegetables, and perfectly grilled proteins from tender Carolina shrimp to duck breast and pork shoulder. You not only taste the care that goes into each dish, but you can also see and hear it because the open kitchen is the centerpiece of the experience (if you want more quiet, ask to sit near the doors). The wine selection includes many unusual, not-too-pricey choices from around the globe, and the desserts are top-drawer, too. Come with a large party, if you can, because you’ll be tempted to taste a lot of the dishes and the portions are huge. One small warning: Some preparations can be very spicy even though they’re not listed as such on the menu, so if you’re not a pepper-lover, make your preferences known.
