Shipwright Inn
A red brick path leads through quiet gardens to the door of the Victorian-era Shipwright Inn, built by a shipbuilder in 1865. Not surprisingly, rooms are nautically named—Captain’s Quarters, Tiller Flat, Wheelhouse, Navigator’s Retreat—but not overtly themed; there are no tacky knick-knacks. Rather, the emphasis is on comfort and elegance. Subdued period furniture reproduces Victorian comfort without being overly ornate. Our favorite room is “Quarterdeck”: pine plank flooring and a hand-stenciled bedroom set with matching canopy. A private veranda, fireplace, and double air tub lend more than a touch of romance to this special room. Breakfasts of eggs benny, fruit tart pastries, and the like are delightful, as is afternoon tea with homemade lemonade and pastries.
