Old Chalk Mine

Frommer's Staff

White chalk had been mined here commercially since the Middle Ages before it was halted toward the end of the 19th century after the extensive shafts posed a danger to city residents. These days, most of the tunnels have been blocked off except for a 2km (1 1/4-mile) stretch that's open to visitors. Truth be told, there's not much to see down here; the thrill is exploring the passages below the Old Town, taking in the vastness of the mine, and enjoying the unadorned beauty of the smooth, white walls. Touring the mine is possible only with a guided tour (tours leave three times daily at 11am, 1, and 4pm) and last around 45 minutes. Most tours are in Polish, though it may be possible to arrange for an English-speaking guide through the Chelm tourist information office. Be sure to bring a sweater or jacket, since the underground temperature remains a chilly 48°F (9°C) year-round.
