Here, in the opulent Renaissance Blackstone Hotel, you’ll find what I consider the best Spanish food in the city. Whereas many tapas can be bland and forgettable, Mercat creates dishes that burst with flavor, like the ham and chorizo croquetas, bacon-wrapped dates, and paellas. You’ll also find a variety of meats and cured meats, cheeses, veggies, seafood and more. Even the flatbreads, usually an afterthought at a restaurant—particularly one with an ethnic theme—are worth coming back for. Although it’s casual, the two-level restaurant has a flirty feel, with its bright and playful decor. It’s a fun spot to grab a sangria and a snack to start the evening if you want to go light on the wallet, or a full meal if you’re all in.
