Nomads of the Seas
This is one of the world's great small-scale luxury cruise-ship operators. The ship Atmosphere, which departs and returns from Puerto Montt, doesn't visit better-known sites, such as Laguna San Rafael, in an effort to journey to places with absolutely no other ships or tourists. Although the price tag is outrageous, it's a small price to pay to visit the farthest reaches of a wild and unruly Patagonia filled with glaciers, mountain lakes, snow-covered volcanoes, hot springs, and fjords that few others have ever laid eyes on. To accomplish this feat, the 159-ft. Atmosphere fuses nature and technology like few cruise ships have ever done. It carries an army of machinery including a Bell 407 helicopter (a second will be added in 2009), six custom-built jet boats, a Hurricane 920 RIB zodiac, four Helitour Mission zodiacs, various rescue boats, and top fly-fishing gear.
Even though it frequently charters rough seas, it's nothing but smooth sailing on this ship. Each of the 14 windowed cabins comes with such perks as soft beds with high thread-count sheets. The main deck combines a sleek circular bar, living space with plush designer couches and chairs, a small library, and elegant dining room. A "wet room" for gear and a spa area with hot tubs and Jacuzzis fill different levels on the back end of the ship. The eco-friendliness of this operation leaves something to be desired, however; this is one instance where being green might not be possible with the use of such high powered, gas-guzzling machines.
Nomads began offering 3-day gastronomic cruises near Puerto Montt and Chiloé in 2009, and is planning ground operations in the Andes and Atacama in 2010.
