Frommer's Staff

The seat of power during the time of Duchy of Cieszyn and a site of human habitation since something like the 5th century A.D. In the 14th century, at the start of the duchy, a Gothic castle was built here. It was made over time and again through the ages as architectural fashions changed. The current appearance is neoclassical from the 19th century. Though the interior of the castle is not normally open to the public, there's a lovely garden here with a beautifully preserved Romanesque rotunda from the 11th century -- one of Poland's earliest Christian churches (and duly recognized on the 20 z bank note) -- and a 14th-century Gothic tower that you can scramble up for views over the surrounding countryside.
