Mosel-Wein-Woche (Mosel Wine Week), celebrating the region’s wines with tasting booths and a street fair, begins the first week of June. The similar Weinfest takes place the last weekend of August. From late November through December 21, Cochem dresses itself up for the Weihnachtsfest (Christmas Festival) that features a daily Christmas market.
The town's biggest attraction is Reichsburg Cochem (www.burg-cochem.de, [tel] 02671/255), one of the few castles in the area still remaining intact. The original castle, built in 1027, was laid to ruin by Louis XIV’s army in 1689. Atop its ruins, the current castle was rebuilt in 1868 in the neo-Gothic style; its medieval ramparts and turrets overlook the town below and create a dramatic backdrop when you view Cochem from the riverside. To reach the castle from the village, follow signs along the steep footpath from the town center, ascending for about 15 minutes, depending on how long you pause to take in the gorgeous views of the town and the Moselle below. Although you can visit the grounds anytime, to view the interior, you'll need to book a guided tour (offered daily mid-March to November, 9am–5pm). During the winter season, hours vary; be sure to check in advance. Guided tours can be conducted in English. Admission is 6€ for adults, 5€ for students, 3€ for children 6 to 17 years old, and 16€ for a family ticket.
